For his master’s thesis at the Chair of High Frequency Technology of ESI member Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Vossiek, Leonhard Hahn was awarded the VDE Bayern Award 2023, a master’s prize from Baumüller and the Fritz and Maria Hofmann Prize.
In his thesis, he dealt with the design, construction and evaluation of a subharmonic super-regenerative receiver. This novel receiver concept represents a particularly space- and energy-efficient alternative to previously used receivers, especially in the technological limit range of high reception frequencies. Based on this technology, receivers for FMCW radars can be designed that specifically scan input signals beyond the technological cut-off frequency of active elements in a phase-coherent manner and amplify them regeneratively. In contrast to conventional topologies, however, only minimal complexity and supply power is required for this, which means that the researched concept can be used particularly efficiently for multi-channel radar imaging in high frequency ranges.
