{"id":3125,"date":"2026-05-15T16:28:48","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T14:28:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esi.fau.de\/?p=3125"},"modified":"2026-05-15T16:28:49","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T14:28:49","slug":"rueckblick-embedded-talk-neuromorphic-hardware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.esi.fau.de\/en\/2026\/05\/15\/rueckblick-embedded-talk-neuromorphic-hardware\/","title":{"rendered":"Review Embedded Talk &#8220;Neuromorphic Hardware&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On the occasion of the 20th Embedded Talks, a highly interesting and practice-oriented discussion on the topic of &#8220;<strong>Neuromorphic Hardware<\/strong>&#8221; took place on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at Josephs in Nuremberg&#8217;s city center. Approximately 40 researchers, developers, and students from universities, research institutes, and industrial companies participated in the event and exchanged ideas about the future role of neuromorphic systems in embedded and edge AI technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event was opened with a welcome address by <strong>Prof. Dr.-Ing. J\u00fcrgen Teich<\/strong>, spokesperson for the FAU Research Center ESI. <strong>Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Georg Mayr<\/strong> (TU Dresden) then gave a keynote address in which he discussed neuromorphic computing at the cloud level, described the hardware developed so far, and presented application scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, <strong>Prof. Dr. Johannes Schemmel<\/strong> (University of Heidelberg) presented the BrainScaleS platform \u2013 an analog, neuromorphic architecture that enables energy-efficient, bio-inspired AI through in-memory computing and local learning mechanisms, and showed how it is being further developed with novel scaling concepts despite growing networks in order to be accessible for research in EBRAINS as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nach einem kurzen Pausenintermezzo folgte die Pr\u00e4sentation von Dr. Fariborz Derakhshan (Nokia Bell Labs) und Dr. Leonidas Richter (Fraunhofer IIS), die zeigte, wie neuromorphe Hardware mit event-basiertem, spiking-neuronalem Computing k\u00fcnftige Kommunikationssysteme revolutionieren kann \u2013 besonders dort, wo Latenz, Energie und Skalierbarkeit entscheidend sind. Anhand zweier neuartiger ASICs \u2013 ADELIA und SENNA \u2013 demonstrierten sie, wie k\u00fcnstliche Intelligenz direkt in Kommunikationshardware integriert werden kann, um die Grenzen klassischer CPU-\/GPU-basierter Systeme zu \u00fcberwinden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>586<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a short break, <strong>Dr. Fariborz Derakhshan<\/strong> (Nokia Bell Labs) and <strong>Dr. Leonidas Richter<\/strong> (Fraunhofer IIS) gave a presentation demonstrating how neuromorphic hardware with event-based, spiking neural computing can revolutionize future communication systems \u2013 especially where latency, energy consumption, and scalability are critical.
