Best Paper Award at ISC 2026: Researching the Energy Efficiency of Next-Gen Arithmetic

Thomas Schlögl and his supervised student Tuan Huy Do have been honored with the Best Paper Award at the 2nd International EESP Workshop (Energy Efficiency with Sustainable Performance) during this year’s International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) in Hamburg.

Their award-winning paper, „Energy Consumption Comparison of Conjugate Gradient Method using Posit Arithmetic and IEEE Floating Point,“ addresses the „power wall“ in high-performance computing. While the industry-standard IEEE 754 floating-point format has been the benchmark for decades, the research explores Posit Arithmetic—a „tapered precision“ alternative.
