The aim of the newly established DFG research group FOR 5880 “Holistic Energy and Performance Modeling for Sustainable Computing (Mod4Comp)” of the German Research Foundation is to take a holistic view of the energy and performance aspects of the interaction between hardware and software. The researchers want to break down the elementary parts of a computer architecture and predict the energy consumption of complex scientific simulations as accurately as possible with the help of mathematical models in order to promote sustainable computing. The resulting development tools should make it possible to develop software and hardware that require far less energy while still providing satisfactory runtime. The focus is on classic computer architectures, e.g., for autonomous driving, special architectures for AI systems, and high-performance computers. Researchers from FAU, TU Dresden, and Forschungszentrum Jülich are pooling their expertise in Mod4Comp. The spokesperson for FOR 5880 is Prof. Dr. Dietmar Fey from the Chair of Computer Architecture.
